Baseball – MLB:

  • The Dodgers are the 1st team in MLB history to have 3 consecutive walk-off HRs by rookies. Those 3 rookies are Matt Beat, Alex Verdugo and Will Smith. The Dodgers swept the Rockies.
    • Not all good things came out of the Dodger game though. A fan was taken to the hospital after being hit by a foul ball hit by Cody Bellinger. This is the 2nd fan in 2 months to be hospitalized bringing up the argument for farther reaching protective nets. Currently nets only have to span from behind home plate to the dugouts.
  • Rangers OF Nomar Mazara ties the MLB longest HR in the last 5 years with 505 yard HR.

  • The Yankees have set a team record with 26 consecutive games with at least 1 HR. In the game against the Astros, 3B DJ LeMahieu hit a HR to break the 1941 Yankees record of 25 games. It wasn’t enough to get them the win, breaking the Astros 7 game losing streak.

Baseball – NCAA:

  • The College World Series is coming to a close with the final to be played today – Wednesday if needed between Michigan and Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt won its last national championship in 2014. Michigan hasn’t won since 1962.

Basketball – NCAA/NBA:

  • Zion goes #1 in the NBA draft to the Pelicans. Shocker. Not. Tacko Fall from UCF signed with the Celtics after not being drafted. This was surprising.
  • Kawhi Leonard is rumored to go free agent with no deals to be signed at least until July 6th. It is expected that he will stay with the Raptors, especially since they just won the title. But you never know. LA is pushing hard for him to join the Clippers.

Football – NCAA/NFL:

  • UConn is expected to move from the American Athletic Conference to the Big East for bball and other sports. An announcement could come as early as next week. The Huskies would have to give the AAC $10MM for withdrawing and 27 months heads-up.
  • Drew Brees wins one in the courtroom. Drew was awarded $6MM in a diamond fraud lawsuit after a La Jolla jeweler sold the Breeses diamonds for $15MM when they were clearly worth much less.
  • Redskins QB Alex Smith will not give up hope that he will return to play football again. Smith was hurt in the game against the Texans on Nov 18th, sustaining a compound fracture and then he caught an infection. Apparently an amputation was even discussed at some point. He has been in an external fixator for 7.5 months. Keep up the good work Alex!
  • Saints’ fans are happy: the Pass Interference challenge rule is official for the 2019 season. As it reads: coaches will be able to challenge pass interference calls or no-calls until the 2 minute warning. After the 2 minute warning, on-site replay officials will be responsible to stop the game to review.
  • Gronk found a new QB

Golf:

  • Chez Reavie won his first PGA title in 11 years (250 events) after winning the Traveler’s Championship by 4 strokes. He shot a 63 on Saturday to lead by 6 strokes going into the final day.
  • Hannah Green not only won her first major on Sunday winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship but also her first LPGA title. Green won by 1 stroke over 3x major winner Symetra Tour.

Olympic Sports:

  • Hannah Green wasn’t the only Aussie to do great things on Sunday. In just 10 hours, 2 female Aussies became world #1 in their sports and Green wins her first major title.
    • Sally Fitzgibbons won the World Surf League’s Rio Pro to become the #1 female surfer half way through the season.
    • Ash Barty (who you might remember just won the French Open) won the Birmingham Classic to become #1 in female in tennis and the #1 seed going into Wimbledon.

ioc.JPG

  • The IOC opened its new $145MM new HQ in Luasanne, Switzerland. They did this on the day that the Olympic games were revived 125 years ago. The rooftop is in the shape of a dove, the symbol for peace. 95% of the old materials were used to create the new HQ.
    • Other IOC news? The 2026 Olympic host was just named as Milan-Cortina (ITA) over Stockholm-Are (SWE). Cortina was supposed to host the 1944 games but that was canceled due to WWII; they later hosted the 1956 Winter games. Stockholm has not hosted a games since the summer of 1912, with the exception of the equestrian events in the 1956 Summer games (Melbourne hosted every other event).
  • Lamine Diack, former head of the IAAF (track) for 16 years will now stand trial for corruption, extortion, doping cover-ups and money-laundering especially involving the 2016 and 2020 games.
  • Track coach Conrad Mainwaring has been arrested and charged with sexual battery after 36 men claimed abuse by this coach. Most of the incidents happened in New England summer camps and California colleges but a few went as far back as England, where Mainwaring grew up. I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of this.

Soccer:

  • The Women’s World Cup is out of group play and into the knockout round.
    • Host nation France beat Brazil yesterday 2-1 in overtime. OT rules are the first goal to score wins.
    • Team USA beat Sweden 2-0 to take 1st place in their group

  • Some sore losers in Cameroon… Even their own African soccer federation is calling for punishment after Cameroon called the officiating of their loss to England in the Round of 16 a ‘miscarriage of justice.’ Cameroon lost 0-3 and just like that score they felt there were 3 instances that the refs did not call correctly.
    • #1) Minute 13: England indirect free kick that led to the first goal.
    • #2) 4th minute of stoppage time before the half: an offside call was overruled by the video assistant referee which led to the 2nd England goal.
    • #3) Beginning of the 2nd half: Cameroon’s Nchout’s goal was taken back after the video assistant referee called offsides.
