Basketball – College: Conference Championship Week. Zion wins ACC Rookie of the year.

Basketball – NBA: Suns break 18 game losing streak. Bird awaits sentencing.

Football – College: Husker QB –> FSU. Vince Young gets fired.

Football – NFL: DeSean Jackson to the Eagles. Lions pick up some players.

Golf: PLAYERS this weekend. Molinari takes home the Arnold Palmer Inv.

Olympic Sports: Mikaela Shiffrin breaking records. IAAF meetings. Race Walk World Record.

  • Zion wins ACC top player of the year and rookie of the year.
  • Kansas guard, Lagerald Vick, took a leave of absence to tend to personal matters and will not return to the Jayhawks team. He is a senior.

  • Jabari Bird is awaiting sentencing for assaulting his ex gf. The former Celtic will be sentenced on May 28th. He faces strangulation or suffocation, kidnapping, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
  • Suns finally ended their 18 game losing streak with a win against the Warriors 115-111. This win was their first win against the Warriors since 2014. Kevin Durant withdrew from the game in the 4th quarter after turning his ankle.

Football – College:

  • Wisconsin QB Alex Hornibrook is transferring to FSU for his last year of eligibility.
  • Texas fired Vince Young from his development officer position after he was arrested for a DWI. This was his 2nd drunk driving arrest in 3 years.
  • Nebraska RB Maurice Washington faces felony charges for possession and distribution of video of his former gf being sexually assaulted.
  • UT president, Bill Powers, died at age 72 of complications from muscular dystrophy. He was instrumental in the implantation of the Longhorn Network.
  • A judge in California ruled against the NCAA cannot restrict compensation to basketball and football players as it pertains to education. This is the first ruling in the much debated field of paying athletes. I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of this.

Football – NFL:

  • Lions pick up DE Trey Flowers with a contract $16MM/yr for 5 yrs and DB Justin Coleman with a 4 yr contract for $36MM.
  • DeSean Jackson is moving to the Eagles. Breaking news at report time.

Golf:

  • The PLAYERS Championship is this weekend. This tournament is basically considered the 5th Tune in this weekend to watch the sparks fly.
  • Francesco Molinari won the Arnold Palmer Championship with a score of 12 under par.

Olympic Sports:

  • Mikaela Shiffrin won her 15th World Cup victory in a single season; this has never been done by a male or female skier in history. And she’s not done. She has 3 more opportunities to further the record. The win was her 39th slalom win, making her just one short of a 32 year World Cup record held by Ingemar Stenmark.

  • Kelly Catlin, USA Olympic track cyclist, killed herself at age 23. She was on the Rio women’s team pursuit silver medal team.
  • IAAF, which governs international track and field competition, has been busy
    • They ruled to keep the ban on Russia for doping.
    • They also are revamping the Diamond League for shorter meets with fewer long distance races (3ks and shorter). There will only be 12 meets that will fit in a 90 min TV event.
  • Chinese woman, Liu Hong, set the 50km race walk world record. She is the first woman to finish in under 4 hours.
