Basketball – College: March Madness is here!

Basketball – NBA: Westbrook suspended. Thunder get a patch. LeBron’s worst quarter.

Golf: Rory wins PLAYERS.

Olympic Sports: Shiffrin makes major mula. Simone Biles returns. FIBA first round

Baseball – MLB:

  • The MLB suspended AJ Hinch for 1 spring training game after the manager for the Astros was ejected for calling an ump ‘unprofessional and arrogant.’ The MLB also stuck Hinch with a fine that was undisclosed.

Basketball – College:

  • March Madness is on. So get your brackets in! Tournament starts tomorrow with the wild card games of Belmont vs Temple and F. Dickinson vs Prairie View.
    • The #1 seeds were: Duke, UVA, Gonzaga and UNC – no surprises there but as every other year, there are guaranteed to be some.

Basketball – NBA:

  • Russell Westbrook was suspended after his 16th technical foul this season during the Thunder’s loss to the Warriors 110-88. For every additional 2 technicals, he will be suspended another game.
  • The OKC Thunder have reached a patch deal with Loves for 4 yrs. This completes the patch sponsorship for all NBA teams.
  • LeBron had his worst quarter ever in his NBA career of 16 yrs. He went 4 for 15 from the field as well as having the last game winning shot blocked. Despite that the Lakers only lost 124-123 against the Knicks. The Knicks swept the Lakers this season, and was the only team that they managed to pull that off in their 14-56 record.
  • The 76ers bs Bucks game was fun to watch as Giannis faced off against Embiid. Giannis scored 52 points with 16 rebounds while Embiid scored 40 with 15 rebounds. This is the first time in 35 years that 2 dueling players both scored over 40 points.

Football – College:

  • Clemson picked up #18 and #29 on the ESPN 300 list with offensive lineman Mitchell Mayes and Bryn Tucker, respectively. This boosters their 2020 recruiting class where they are currently ranked 10th although they have the most 3-5 stars committed in the top 10 with 29 total.
  • Former Kansas coach David Beaty is suing the school for $3MM of buyout money he believe he is owed for the 3 years left on his contract.
  • Former Ohio St coach Urban Meyer will not be gone from tv during the 2019/2020 season he just wont be on the field. Fox hired Meyer for its pregame show.

Football – NFL:

  • Former Browns QB Johnny Manziel (you also know him from Texas A&M) just signed with the Alliance of American Football, the new league that’s trying to be like the NFL’s cousin. He will join the Memphis Express. This was after Manziel was let go from his Canadian Football League team earlier this month for an undisclosed reason. That team, the Alouettes, essentially barred him from the CFL league. He has been a handful for teams before (keep in mind this article is biased but it gets the point across).

baerk and odell.JPG

  • Some of the biggest news over the weekend was that Odell Beckham Jr was traded to the Browns. With a QB like Mayfield who is accurate and can scramble throwing to Odell, watch out for the Browns. The Browns didn’t win a game in the 2017 season are now looking to be one of the best in the AFC. All they have to work on now is team chemistry

Golf:

  • Rory McIlroy won the PLAYERS Championship on Sunday by 1 stroke to end 16 under par over Jim Furyk (who would’ve been the oldest to win the tournament if he had won). This win moves Rory up to 4th in the Official World Golf Rankings
    • Rory has been on a hot streak lately finishing 1st, T-6th, 2nd, T-4th, t-5th, T-4th in the last 6 PGA tournaments he competed in. He only needs the Masters to complete the golf ‘grand slam’ which will be competed in less than a month.

shiffrin.JPG

Olympic Sports:

  • Mikaela Shiffrin ties another record on Sunday; this time with her win in the giant slalom. This ties the record of 4 discipline titles in a single season which was previously held by Lindsey Vonn and Tina Maze
    • All of these wins (17 of them in total) means Shiffrin won $885,000 for the season in prize money. She won her 3rd straight overall World Cup title. The top male Marcel Hirscher only won $564,000 after winning his 8th straight overall World Cup title which extends his own record.
  • Simone Biles debuted her 2019 season in style winning gold in the All-Around at the DTB Pokal World Cup in Germany. She topped the field in 3 events (uneven bars, vault and floor). Just casually knocking the rust off with another win. Worlds are in October.
  • The USA will face Turkey, Czech Republic and Japan in the first rounds of the FIBA tournament. The USA looks to win its 3rd straight title, which has never been done before. #2 ranked going into the tournament is Spain followed by France.
