Basketball – College:

  • Coach Roy Williams is ok after he fell to his knee during the UNC game at Clemson. He suffered from vertigo but says he is fine now.
  • UConn retired Ray Allen’s number 34 jersey on Saturday in their game against South Florida. First number to be retired at UConn!
  • Jordan Caroline, a forward for Utah, punched the glass around a fire extinguisher after they lost to Utah St on Saturday night. 12. Nevada lost 81-76.
  • Big 10 commissioner Jim Delany will retire in 2020. TBD on who will replace him

Basketball – NBA:

  • Trae Young got thrown out during the game against the Bulls on Sunday for taunting Kris Dunn. The two also got in an altercation before Young was thrown out. Both players disagreed with the call afterwards. The Hawks won 123-118. This was a rematch game after a 4OT game where Young scored 49 points.
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sold 234 pieces of memorabilia including 4 of his 6 NBA Championship rings through Goldin Auctions. The items sold for $2.9MM! The top item fetched $398k for his 1985 championship ring.
  • Lakers and Carmelo Anthony have been in discussions until recently when the Lakers had a slump, throwing away their chances at the playoffs. The Lakers lost 4 of the last 5 games.

Football – College:

  • Trump gave the North Dakota St football team Big Macs and Chick-fil-A sandwiches when they came to the White House to celebrate their FCS Championship.
  • Brandon Wimbush and McKenzie Milton are in tight competition for QB at UCF. Something to watch until August.
  • Utah extends head coach Kyle Whittingham’s contract through 2023.

Football – NFL:

  • The NFL Combine was this weekend. For all the deets, check here!
    • Ohio St’s Nick Bosa is the projected #1 draft pick after the combine. Followed by Quinnen Williams is the next best odds.
    • The NFL draft is April 25 – 27 in Nashville
  • The Texans put a franchise tag on Jadeveon Clowney, which means a team can offer money to Clowney after free agency but would have to give up 2 first round draft picks if the Texans chose not to match the amount.

Golf:

  • Keith Mitchell won the Honda Classic after making a 15 foot birdie putt to beat Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler. With the winning score of only 9 under par, there were a lot of star power in the running to win. Only 29 golfers were under par after the weekend was over and the cut on Friday was 2 over. This course is known for its water traps especially one called the bear trap.
  • Tiger Woods has pulled out of the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to a muscle strain in his neck.
  • Royal Liverpool will host the 2022 Open Championship.
  • Former Web.com golfer, Johnny DelPrete was arrested for soliciting prostitution for the same place as Robert Kraft. This will not probably be the last athlete to get caught in this sting.
  • The USGA and Justin Thomas are going to discuss rule changes after this weekend. Justin Thomas was not allowed to replace a bent club in his bag and Alex Cejka was DQ’d for using an oversized greens-reading book. TBD on how this goes.

yomif.JPG

Olympic Sports:

  • Yomif Kejelcha broke the indoor mile with a time of 3:47.01 which stood for 22 years. 3rd times the charm! Yomif was .008 seconds shy last month after being .21 second off weeks before. He broke the record by 1.44 seconds. Don’t feel so bad for the record holder, El Guerrouj holds the outdoor record as well from 1998 with a time of 3:26.00.
  • Women this one is going to hurt. A women’s one-day cycling race was put on pause as Swiss former road race champion Nicole Hanselmann rode out clear of the rest of the field. She rode so quickly she almost caught the men’s race which started 10 minutes before the women. The officials halted the women’s race so that the gap could remain, Hanselmann was allowed to restart ahead of the field but after the pause and the cold weather, the group caught her. Hanselmann finished 74th!
  • Chloe Kim broke her ankle in the Burton US Open on her first run in the halfpipe final. Kim still finished second after Maddie Mastro who became the first woman to land a double crippler (double backflip above the halfpipe) in a competition. She will need surgery, more details to come.
  • LA will no longer host the first Urban Games in September and will be replaced by Budapest. Rumors say that it is due to disagreements with organizers. The Urban Games will have events like 3 on 3 basketball, skateboarding and break dancing.
  • Australia and other Oceania athletes will be allowed to compete in some team sports in the 2022 Asian Games.
