Baseball – MLB:

  • A’s designated Kendrys Morales for assignment on Sunday – English translation: they had to let him go. With the return of 1B Matt Olsen (who has been out for 34 games with a hand injury) and Morales struggling on the plate, it wasn’t a surprise his spot was in jeopardy. The A’s acquired Morales from the blue Jays before this season. Mark Canha moved from the IL to replace Morales.
  • Another team with some drama in the office? The Giants President had to release that Derek Holland did not suffer a fake injury after the leftie pitcher complained to the press after being moved to the bullpen.
    • So far all that is confirmed is that the injury is at least a bone bruise on his left index finger. This comes as the Giants are LAST in the NL West.
  • The Yankees have had 17 players go onto the IL this season with the newest one being righty pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga. 12 players are still currently on the IL.
  • Braves righty Kevin Gausman dropped the appeal of his 5 game suspension. He got suspended for intentionally throwing a 97mph fastball AT Marlins’ Jose Urena on May 3rd. Gausman missed Sunday’s game against the Diamondbacks and will miss games agains the Cardinals (3) and Brewers (1).
    • Feel bad for Urena? Don’t. He was suspended for 6 games last year for intentionally hitting the Braves’ Ronald Acuna Jr who had hit 5 straight HRs (including 3 against the Marlins).
  • The lights went out in the Yankees vs Rays game on Sunday causing the game to be delayed 43 minutes in the 9th inning.

ncaa softball

Baseball/Softball – NCAA:

  • NCAA Softball Selection night was Sunday and the Sooners earned the top spot. The College World Series will be played in OKC May 30th – June 4th/5th keep in mind that is after the Regionals (Thurs – Sunday) and Super Regional rounds (May 23-26).
    • Regionals will be held in: Norman, OK; Evanston, IL; Austin, TX; Tuscaloosa, AL; Gainesville, FL; Knoxville, TN; Stillwater, OK; Tallahassee, FL; Seattle, WA; Lexington, KY; Oxford, MS; Tucson, AZ; Minneapolis, MN.

Basketball – NBA:

  • Playoff Update:
    • Warriors Durant is out with a strained right calf and will miss game 1 of the Western Conference finals against the Trail Blazers. It is also unlikely he will play in game 2.
    • Raptors Kawhi Leonard beat the 76ers with a game winning buzzer beater in game 7, after the ball bounced on the rim 4xs! This is the first time in history that a team has won in round 3 off a last second buzzer beater in game 7. The Raptors play the Bucks on Wednesday.
    • Mavericks forward Kristaps Porzingis was in a bloody altercation in Latvia during the weekend at a club. Several Russians attacked the Mav’s power forward for allegedly leaving the Knicks before security broke up the scuffle.
    • Michigan coach John Beilein is leaving the wolverines to go coach the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA.
    • LA Lakers hired Frank Vogel as their new head coach for the next 3 years. This is after Magic Johnson left suddenly after getting LeBron to make the switch to the West coast.

Football – NFL:

  • A judge in Palm Beach granted to allow Kraft to suppress the video evidence of his solicitation in his prostitution case. The state may appeal but this is definitely a blow to the prosecution’s case. Kraft attorneys got the video thrown out basically because they said that detectives did not try to use less intrusive investigative methods first.
  • Former Chiefs head coach and Lions DC, Gunther Cunningham, died at the age of 72 on Saturday. He came to the USA from Germany after WWII and spoke no English at the time. He also coached at Oregon, Arkansas, Stanford and California.
  • Rumors are swirling that QB Geno Smith is going to sign with the Seahawks. The Seahawks would be Geno’s 4th team in 4 years. But Geno Smith’s job will not be an easy one as he will have to compete against former Bronco QB Paxton Lynch for the backup spot to Russell Wilson.

orange bowl

Football – NCAA:

  • The Orange Bowl has been moved to December 30th night game since this year the Orange Bowl will not host a CFP Semi. The CFP Semis will take place on Dec 28th. It has been a tradition for the Orange Bowl to be a night game since 1965.
  • Texas and Florida will play a home-and-home in 2030 (@ Florida) and 2031 (@ UT). Texas has also set up home-and-homes with Arizona St in 2032 and 2033.
  • Georgia landed IL Tate Ratledge who ranked 75th on the ESPN 300. This is the Bulldog’s 4th ESPN 300 recruit since May and 6 total. Georgia currently sits 9th in recruiting class rank.

Golf:

  • Sung Kang earned his first victory on the PGA Tour after 159 starts at the AT&T Byron Nelson this weekend. With a strong score of 23 under par, Kang beat the field by 2 strokes, after a semi-washed out Saturday pushed some of the golfers to play almost 27 holes on Sunday.
  • The PGA Championship has moved from August to this weekend with the new condensed PGA Tour schedule. Watch the best battle it out at Bethpage Black, NY this weekend.
    • Who will be there: Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, etc and reigning champion Brooks Koepka
    • Who won’t be there: Justin Thomas just announced that he will miss this major due to a wrist injury.

Hockey:

  • Stanley Cup Playoffs Updates:
    • It was a narrow margin to make it to the next round for the Sharks who beat the Avalanche 3-2 in Game 7 to advance. And an even narrower margin for the Blues who beat the Stars 2-1 in double OT in game 7.
    • The Bruins made it quick by taking the series against the Blue Jackets 4-2. And the Hurricanes did one better by sweeping their series against the Islanders. The Hurricanes hadn’t played since May 3rd and the Bruins took advantage of that starting off the series 2-0.
  • USA won 3-2 over Finland after Dylan Larkin scored with 1:13 to go in OT. Although this is all still in group play at the World Hockey Championships; this was a big win for the USA in group A after an upset loss to Slovakia (host country) in game 1. Russia is undefeated in Group B.
    • Group A: USA, Slovakia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Great Britain, France
      • USA plays Great Britain on May 15th; Denmark on May 18th; Germany on May 19th; Canada on May 21st to end group play
    • Group B: Switzerland, Russia, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Czech Republic, Norway, Latvia

boling.JPG

Olympic Sports:

  • Matthew Boling, a senior at Houston Strake Jesuit, set the national high school record from 1990 with a wind aided 9.98, but the record will be wind-legal 10.13 at the Texas state meet on Saturday. The previous record was 10.15. Matt Boling also won the LJ title at the state meet and has signed his letter of intent to compete for Georgia next year
  • The USA won 3 relays on Sunday to win the world relays, however Jamaica beat the US women in the 4x100m relays with a time of 43.27 (USA finished with 43.268). The bigger upset was Brazil’s men’s 4x100m relay team also beating the Americans by 2 one-hundredths of a second.
  • Sticking with the T&F news, Mexican racewalker Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez has been banned for 4 yrs for doping effective on Nov 16th however she will keep the silver medal she earned in Rio. Another athlete banned: LJ Ineta Radevica from Latvia who placed 4th in the London Olympics. This is the 3rd Latvian athlete to be DQ’d from London.

sagan.JPG

  • Peter Sagan, 3x road cycling world champion and most winningest (yes that’s grammatically correct) rider in history, won the opening stage of the Tour of California and then went onto win the whole thing. Travis McCabe almost caught Sagan at the finish line to take 2nd and Max Walscheid placed 3rd.
