Weekly Update – Week of May 24, 2021

Weekly Update

Baseball-MLB: 2 more no hitters! Mikolas out again. deGrom back tomorrow. Rays win 10. Reyes out 5-7 weeks.

Baseball/Softball-NCAA: NCAA Softball onto Super Regionals. Big 12, ACC, SEC Baseball Championships this week. Check out the schedules below!

Basketball-NBA: Playoffs are on!

Golf: Mickelson wins 6th major – oldest ever. Crowd swarmed the 18th.

Hockey: Playoffs are in full swing!

Olympic Sports: Biles is back! China ultramarathon kills 21. 2 2x Olympic Champions will miss Tokyo – USA Taylor. GBR Brown is back! Diamond League debut with strong showing from Team GBR. Nina King 3rd black woman AD. Fin wins world hockey championships.

Tennis: Coco Gauff wins first title on clay. Florida men and Texas women take tennis natty.

Baseball-MLB:

  • There have been 2 more no-hitters, which brings the total of no-hitters to 6 and its only May… The MLB record for the most in 1 season is only 7 which happened in 1990, 1991, 2012 and 2015. The two latest are: Tigers’ P Spencer Turnbull threw one on May 18th against the Mariners. Yankees’ P Corey Kruber thrown one on May 19th against the Rangers. That brings us to another potential record but this one no one wants. The Mariners, Rangers and Indians have all been no-hit teams 2xs in the season. No team has ever had 3… 2 of these no-hitters were also just 1 batter away from being perfect games. We haven’t seen a perfect game since 2012 but it certainly looks like the odds might be in our favor this year.
  • Poor RHP Miles Mikolas cannot catch a break. In his first major league game to start since 2019, he was pulled after 4 innings and put on the IL for forearm soreness. His last game was the NL Championship games in 2019 for flexor tendon surgery then he messed up his shoulder in the bullpen in 2021. Mikolas had an MRI on Saturday following the game.
  • Good news for Mets fans, Jacob deGrom is set to return on Tuesday after being on the IL since May 11 with back tightness.

  • The Rays have won their last 10 straight games. Tampa Bay trailed 2-4 in the 9th before rallying to win 6-4 with all the action happening in the 9th. Let’s see how long this streak continues. They play the Blue Jays again tonight but have already locked up the series with 3 wins.
  • Indians RF Franmil Reyes will be out for 5-7 weeks with an oblique strain. Reyes leads the team in RBIs and is 2nd in HRs right now and this may not help the team’s no-hitter record possibility either. He obtained the injury when batting in the 6th inning on a foul ball.

Baseball/Softball-NCAA: (since there is a lot going on)

  • Softball NCAA tournament has started. It’s now onto the Super Regionals (best of 3 series).
    • UCLA, VTech, Florida St, LSU, Arkansas, Arizona, Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma St, Mizzou, James Madison, Washington and Oklahoma advance.
  • This week is the Conference Championships for baseball. The NCAA tournament qualifiers will be announced next Monday.
    • Nebraska already won the Big 10 Championship
    • Arizona won the Pac12.
  • Give this high schooler a scholarship…

Basketball:

  • Playoffs have begun! Here are just some of the highlights so far!
    • Epic showdown between LeBron and Steph Curry if you missed that. The 2 teams met up in a playin game for one of the final spots in the playoffs, not the final although it seemed felt it. The Warriors were leading by 13 at half before this nasty shot by LeBron to win the game 103-100. The Warriors then proceeded to lose to the Grizzlies on Friday to miss the playoffs completely.
    • Trae Young snuck in a game winning floater to beat the Knicks 107-105 in game 1 in Madison Square Garden. After hitting that shot, the crowd went silent when they had previously been screaming obscenities at Young. The Hawks are up 1-0 in the series. Young scored 32 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds in his first playoff game ever. Let that sink in.
    • The Bucks lead the series over the Heat 1-0 after winning 109-107 in OT. And the team better be thanking Khris Middleton, who not only scored 27 points, but also the game winner. It was 0.5 seconds from being a buzzer beater.

Golf:

  • You have to be living under a rock to miss this one. Phil Mickelson won his 6th major at the PGA Championship this weekend at age 50, the oldest man to ever win a major. The average age has been 33-34 lately but last year’s winner was 23-year-old Collin Morikawa. This is Phil’s 45th PGA Tour title. He only needs the US Open to complete the career grand slam, which is the next major up for grabs (June 17-20th).
    • Brooks Koepka was in the final pairing with Lefty but shot a round of 74 to finish 2 shots off the lead, however not a bad result considering he has been battling a knee injury that even his doctors said would take 6 months to come back from. He is on month 2… Louis Oosthuizen also tied Brooks for 2nd as he was looking for his first major since 2010 but couldn’t get it done on what was clearly Phil’s day.
    • In case you missed it, security at the championship completely lost control of the crowd n the 18th fairway as they went and swarmed Phil. This led to a couple of scary moments. Especially for Phil’s competitor, Brooks, who was literally harder to find than Waldo in the crowd for a couple minutes as he approached the green. The 18th fairway rush of the crowd did not help as he said his knee got banged up several times…intentionally or not, he is unsure but there was no doubt that the crowd was very pro-Phil. Also Brooks’ caddy got hit in the face.

Hockey:

  • Stanley Cup playoffs are underway! Here are the updated results.

Olympic Sports:

  • Simone Biles is back and she is in great form. She is officially the first woman to ever land a Yurchecnko double pike in competition…
  • China is not only dealing with the boycotting the Olympics issue but also the fact that 21 people (so far) have been killed in a mountain ultramarathon. Hail, freezing rain and winds caused the deaths during the 100km race which was held at Yellow River Stone Forest at 6,500-9,800 ft altitude. The extreme weather came in unexpectedly according to race organizers but local weather channels had been warning of hail for 3 days prior.

  • USA Triple Jump 2x Olympic Champion Christian Taylor has torn his Achilles and will miss the Tokyo Olympics. It was a quick turnaround after tearing it in Czech on Wednesday and having surgery to fix it in GER on Thursday but the recovery road is a long one. Taylor is 30 and won the TJ in both London and Rio. He also won 3 World Championships in a row.
    • Speaking of not returning Olympic champions, KEN 2x Gold Medalist in the 800m, David Rudisha will miss the Tokyo games due to a hamstring issue. This one isn’t too surprising has Rudisha has not competed internationally since 2017. He currently holds the WR of 1:42.15. So there is guaranteed to be a new 800m and TJ Olympic champion in Tokyo.

  • GBR Skateboarder Sky Brown has returned from a life threatening to finish 2nd in a Tokyo qualifier on Sunday. This may seem odd because Sky is only 12 but last year she fell from a ramp in California suffering fractures in her skull, wrist and hand. Sky is hoping to become GBR’s youngest summer Olympian by competing in the women’s park event. The record for youngest brit to compete in the summer Olympic Games was 13-year-old swimmer Margery Hinton from the 1928 Olympics. Overall 11-year-old Cecilia Colledge will still hold the youngest ever in figure skating in the 1932 Winter games.
  • The Diamond League opened its season in England this weekend and the brits had themselves a hometown winner. In a stacked 100m field including Shelly-Ann Fraser Price (2x Olympic Champion) and American Sha’Carri Richardson, GBR Dina Asher-Smith took first with a time of 11.35 seconds in rainy and windy conditions. In no surprise later, GBR Laura Muir won the 1500m with a time of 4:03.73 destroying the field. USA Sam Kendericks beat SWE Duplantis in the pole vault 5.74m>5.55m. Expect those 2 to trade wins almost every meet.
  • Nina King will become the 3rd black woman AD at a power 5 conference school when she takes over at Duke later this year. Current AD Kevin White is retiring on Sept 1 and King has worked for White for the last 13 years. UVA and Vanderbilt also have black women as their ADs. Only 3 additional schools have women in that position: Pitt, Penn St and Washington.
  • FIN beat the USA to win the world hockey championship.
  • Japan has opened 2 mass vaccination centers in prep for the games.

Tennis:

  • Coco Gauff won her 2nd and 3rd pro titles at the Emilia-Romagna Open this weekend as she won the singles and doubles with her partner Caty McNally. This tournament was played on clay and was Gauff’s first win on the surface. Perfect timing, because the French Open begins next week.
  • NCAA tennis national championships were decided this weekend. The Florida men beat Baylor 4-1 and the Texas women beat Pepperdine 4-3 to claim their titles.
