Basketball:

  • NCAAM season started this week…
    • Duke beat Kentucky in the first ranked vs ranked showdown of the season on opening day. Remember this is Duke without Coach K now.
    • #1 Gonzaga controlled the game against #5 Texas from the beginning, leading by 20 at half and winning 86-74.
    • #2 UCLA beat #4 Villanova by a score very similar 86-77.
    • No really big upsets this week.
  • The NCAA upheld their conviction of a one-year postseason ban on the OSU Cowboys men’s bball program. Former assistant coach Lamont Evans accepted $22k to guide athletes to certain financial advisors. The school cooperated in the investigation into their former employee once he was charged but the NCAA kept the punishment on the school. They have since gotten death threats.
  • Nuggets Nikola Jokic has been suspended for a game after this terrible shove. Clearly in retaliation to the hit by Heat’s Markieff Morris, Jokic shoved Morris to the ground after the play was over. Jimmy Butler was also ejected due to the scuffle that followed.
  • The Timberwolves have been fined $250k for paying for a offseason practice/ground workouts in a market (Miami) outside their home market (MN).
  • AD is back and so are the Lakers’ Ws!

Football-NCAAF:

  • There were only 5 loses in the Top 25 but another undefeated team goes down. #8 Oklahoma fell to Baylor this weekend and the Bears went to work in the 4th quarter scoring 17 points. OU HC wasn’t too keen on the last-minute FG. #4 Ohio St put the beat down on #19 Purdue to win 59-31. #6 Michigan handled a good-but-unranked Penn St team. #10 Oklahoma St rolled over TCU. #15 Ole Miss was up 15-0 at half over #11 Texas A&M and never looked back. Final score was 29-19. #12 Wake Forest beat NC St in a close one 45-42. #17 Auburn was upset by Mississippi State 43-34 despite trailing 10-28 at half. Newly re-ranked #25 Arkansas took a FG to beat LSU in OT. Iowa St was on the outside of the ranking looking in but will not be ranked this week after they lost to Texas Tech on a 62 yard FG.
  • If you think you’re having a bad Monday… Let’s not forget… Kansas has finally ended its 13-year losing streak to fellow Big 12 teams on the road and they did it in Austin over Texas. Texas was the 31 point favorite and has now lost 5 weeks in a row (first time since 1956).
    • Loses:  8. Oklahoma, 11. Texas A&M, 16. NC St, 17. Auburn, 19. Purdue
  • USC vs Cal game has been postponed due to COVID. They will now play on December 4th (since its unlikely either team will be playing in the Pac 12 championship game that is scheduled for that same weekend). Cal had ~24 players test positive for COVID last week against Arizona even with a vaccination rate of 99% among players.

  • Week 12 3 Top 25 matchups and Cincinnati’s biggest test in SMU. College GameDay is at the Big 10 matchup
    • Upset watch: 3. Cincinnati, 4. Oregon, 5. Ohio St, 7. Michigan St, 12. Oklahoma, 18. Iowa, 21. Arkansas,

Football-NFL:

  • Week 10 recap: There were some big upsets this week. Cam Newton is back and on the Panthers…again. But whether it was return of the prodigal son that got the tam amped or something else, they upset the Cardinals 34-10. Washington out played the Bucs winning 29-19 after TB 12 had a ehh kinda day. The Browns suffered their worst loss since 2005, losing 45-7 to the Pats. The Lions are still winless after they missed a 48 yard FG to win in OT against the Steelers. Obviously, God doesn’t want this team to win because this kick looked like it was blocked it was such a bad shank but was never actually touched… They tied with the Steelers so technically they didn’t lose yay? Aaron Rodgers was back and playing after his COVID debacle and they shut out the Seahawks 17-0.
    • The Titans, Packers and Cardinals lead the league with 8 wins.

  • Chase Young, former Ohio St and current Washington DE, is out for the season with a ACL tear on this play. Young only had 1.5 sacks on the year after winning Defensive Player of the Year the prior year.
  • Follow up on the Aaron Rodgers COVID story: The team was fined $300k while Rodgers and WR Lazard were each fined $14,650 for breaking protocols. Rodgers was fined for not wearing a mask during press conferences and the team got fined bc they did not report the fact that both Rodgers and Lazard attended a Halloween party. Costly party.

Golf:

  • 4 straight birdies in the final round gave Jason Kokrak his 3rd PGA Tour win at the Houston Open this weekend. He beat Scottie Scheffler, who was going for his first victory and Martin Trainer, who has only made 9 cuts in his last 71 tournaments. Kokrak has won in Texas before, taking his 2nd PGA Tour win at Colonial this year. Before his first win, Kokrak had 232 starts without one but now has 3 in the last 13 months.

Motorsports:

  • The GOAT is done in MotoGP. #46 Valentino Rossi raced his last MotoGP race on Sunday in Valencia and it was a show to behold. After struggling on the Petronas….. Rossi finished his career with one last Top 10. 2021 was the only season where he failed to get at least 1 podium in his over 20 year career. He is a 7x MotoGP World Champion with 89 wins, 199 podiums and 55 poles in his 372 starts. He raced for Honda, Yamaha and Ducati from 2000-2021. #GrazieVale

Olympic Sports:

  • History was made at the World Cup speedskating event in Poland. USA Erin Jackson is the first black woman to win a WC race. She won the 500m in 37.613, beating the defending Olympic champ JPN Nao Kodaira by 0.13. Jackson was the first black woman to qualify for the US Olympic speedskating team in 2018 after just 4 months in the sport (she was a inline skater and roler derby athlete previously).
  • 2 ROC HJ-ers have been DQ’d from the London games. The Gold medalist Ivan Ukhov and bronze medalist Svetlana Shkolina have both been caught doping. This causes American Erik Kynard to get his first Olympic gold – congrats Erik!
  • JPN men’s figure skater Shoma Uno took home the NHK Trophy in his home nation after landing 4 quads during his free skate. He was in first after his short program and no one could catch him. In fact, 2nd place was 30 points behind. Reigning 2x gold medalist Hanyu WD and Chen were not there. But USA Zhou took second place by less than 1 full point. USA Men’s figure skating looks to be in good hands with those two.
