Basketball: Trade tea! NBA Draft is Wed. Mav Porzingis out for beginning of season. Weatherspoon full time Pelican coach. NCAA March Madness all in Indy?

Football-NCAAF: 1 Loss in Top 25 – sorry SMU. 14 games cancelled/postponed. GameDay in Norman – BOOMER! LSU in trouble with assault cases. Muschamp out of SC. Utah St loses QB after HC.

Football-NFL: Kyler’s unbelievable Hail Mary. Brees cracked some ribs.  Browns facility closed.  Raiders take victory lap – literally. Darnold out. Bakers dropped robbery charges.

Golf: DJ wins green jacket!

Motorsports: Mir new MotoGP World Champ.

Olympic Sports: IOC Prez recommends vaccine – duh. Lochte’s bad day. Jack banned. Schoeman might get a longer ban. Kipruto’s scandalous affair.

Baseball:

  • *Glass shatters* Move over fellas, Kim Ng is the first female GM as the Marlins hired her to the position on Friday. This is a big barrier to break. Ng played collegiate softball and was hired as an intern by the White Sox out of school. She then worked for the Yankees along side former SS Derek Jeter. In an interview with GMA, Ng said she had applied for many many GM positions but had always been past up. Well she cant say that anymore.
  • Braves signed a one-year deal with LHP Drew Smyly for $11MM. Pack your bags from SF to ATL! He has also spent time in TX, PA, FL and NY.
  • Boston Red Sox have hired back Alex Cora. Yes the same guy they released in January after his supposed involvement with the Astros sign stealing scandal. It was ruled that Cora was not involved and obviously Boston believes him.

Basketball:

  • All the Trade Tea
    • Chris Paul is moving to PHX after the Thunder traded him and Abdel Nader for Kelly Oubre Jr, Ricky Rubio, Ty Jerome and Jalen Lecque along with a 2022 first round draft pick. Paul will be reunited with his coach from the Pelicans, Monty Williams.
    • Anthony Davis will be a free agent this offseason.
    • James Harden is considering joining his old pal, KD at the Nets.
    • All of this and Free Agency begins on Friday – its going to be a fun week!
  • The 2020 NBA Draft is this Wednesday. After a delay (due to COVID of course) we are finally going to see the NBA Draft.
    • The first five picks go to: Timberwolves, Warriors, Hornets, Bulls and Cavaliers.
  • Dallas Mavericks Kristapas Porzingis will be out for the beginning of the NBA season as he continues to rehab from meniscus surgery in his right knee. So far the date for Porzingis to return to the court is Jan 1.
  • Another woman making moves up the ladder, Teresa Weatherspoon is now a full-time coach for the Pelicans. Weatherspoon was a 5x WNBA All-Star and HC at La Tech.
  • The NCAA is in discussions for hosting the entire NCAA March madness tournament in Indianapolis. This will take away 13 cities opportunity to host prelim rounds of the tourney but could keep athletes safe in a very similar way as the NBA bubble. The cancellation of the tournament last year cost $325MM but the NBA bubble cost $150MM. If a team was to make the Final Four that would mean the teams would be in one spot for a month.

Football – NCAAF:

  • After 14 games were either canceled or postponed, including #1, #3, #5, #12, #15 and #24, only 1 Top 25 team lost this weekend. #19 SMU lost to the smallest D1 school, Tulsa. Tulsa has had a good year putting up a good fight against #14 OSU and now taking down #19. They were rewarded by being ranked in the Top 25!
    • GameDay is live for Bedlam in Norman, OK! See you there Rece.
  • LSU is in some hot water after it was found that officials at the school knew about 3 sexual assault allegations against RB Derrius Guice and other former players. Officials ignored or denied the victim’s request for protections and the football players in question were allowed to stay on campus. In one of the cases, a LSU tennis player says that WR Drake Davis had punched her in the stomach and then the school didn’t do anything when he continued to ‘assault and strangle her.’ Davis was eventually arrested and suspended from the team. The report goes on to name 9 other players who have been reported for sexual misconduct and dating violence since their HC Ed Oregron was promoted. Guice has been released from the Washington football team and was arrested after he had 3 separate charges of domestic violence.
  • The South Carolina Gamecocks have said goodbye to HC Will Muschamp as of today. The Gamecocks are 2-5 and OC Mike Bobo will act as interim HC. Muschamp was there for 5 years and had a 28-30 record. Last year the team was 4-8 but they have lost their last 14 of 20 games.
  • Utah St has let their QB Jason Shelley go after a violation of team rules. The Aggie program is in trouble as they already let their HC Gary Anderson go on 11/7.
  • LB Thomas Allen of Indiana was injured in their game against Michigan St this Saturday with a season-ending hip injury. He will undergo surgery very similar to Tua’s. Oh and he is the HC’s son.

Football – NFL:

  • Do you believe in miracles? Kyler Murray does. Especially if they’re in the hands of DeAndre Hopkins.
  • Saints QB Drew Brees fractured his ribs and now has a collapsed lung on his right side. He has 3 cracked ribs on his left side and 2 on the right. Supposedly the 3 left ribs were cracked during Brees’ game against the Bucs last week and the 2 right ribs were cracked during the 49ers game. Jameis Winston came in as backup when Brees had trouble breathing.
  • The Browns have closed their practice facility after he 2nd consecutive week of a player testing positive. OL Chris Hubbard was placed on the reserve/COVID list for this past weekend. So far they are still on to play the Eagles next weekend.
  • The LV Raiders’ bus took a victory lap around the Chiefs stadium before heading to the airport and Chiefs’ HC was not pleased. And HC Reid and GM Brett Veach have both had their contracts extended.
  • Jets QB Sam Darnold is now out indefinitely with a right shoulder injury. As if the winless Jets don’t have enough problems. Backup QB Joe Flacco will take the reigns from now on.
  • All charges have been dropped for Giants CB DeAndre Baker who was accused of 4 counts of robbery with a firearm.
  • In this week’s case of the Mondays, all of the twitter creeps who went after Ravens’ Center Matt Skura’s wife. Yes his wife was getting threatening DMs… come on people.

Golf:

  • ICYMI: Golf’s biggest tournament was played this weekend and Dustin Johnson, world #1, now has a green jacket to his name. In his 2nd major win and 24th PGA Tour win, Johnson shot the lowest to par score ever in the history of the tournament at -20. He also only recorded 4 bogeys – another record oh and he won by 5 stroked. DJ got emotional as he described what winning the Masters meant to him. He grew up only ~an hour drive from the course and to fulfill all childhood dreams, Tiger Woods was the reigning champion so he was the one to put the green jacket on DJ’s shoulders. He is the first World #1 golfer to take the title since Tiger did it in 2002. The usually emotionless DJ gives us a glimpse into how much it meant during his post win interview. All the feels 😊

Motorsports:

  • This weekend Joan Mir locked up the MotoGP World Championship with a 9th place finish at the Valencia GP. There is technically another race this weekend but no one can catch Mir in the points. The MotoGP 2nd year rider took his first win last week and now has a World Championship to his name.

Olympic Sports:

  • The IOC president visited Tokyo for his first visit to Japan since the Olympics were postponed. And President Thomas Bach is encouraging all participants and fans to get the vaccine before the Olympics.
  • Ryan Lochte competed this weekend in what he calls as the ‘worst meet I’ve ever had.’ It was the first meet back from COVID and it did not go well for the 12x Olympic medalist. His highest finish was 3rd in the 200m IM but he swam 3 other events that didn’t break the top 10 and he dropped the 100m back. With the US Olympic trials scheduled for next June, he’s got some serious work to do.
  • AUS swimmer Shayna Jack has been banned for 2 years for accidentally ingesting ligandrol. However there is a positive here. The Tokyo Olympic open 2 weeks after her ban ends. Her ban started after her positive test in June of 2019.
  • RSA (South African) swimmer Roland Schoeman is now looking at a 4 year ban instead of a one year ban after WADA suggested an increase on his sentence. Shoeman tested positive for a black market doping product. His ban has already expired back in May but not if the CAS decide to increase it. The 40 year old swimmer has been training for Tokyo. He has already competed in 4 Olympics. TBD if he gets to compete in this one. Decision is likely to take several weeks.
  • KEN steeplechase 2016 Olympic champion Conseslus Kipruto has been charged with having sex with a 15 year old girl, which is illegal and could carry a sentence of at least 20 years if convicted. He is also back-to-back world champion in his event. Kipruto is pleading not guilty.
