Olympic Sports: Lolo back in the sled. Vlhova won slalom over Shiffrin. USA TJ Craddock suspended.

Baseball:

  • Mets 2B Robinson Cano has tested positive for stanozolol, a performance enhancing drug, so he will now be suspended for the entire 2021 season. Sounds familiar? It should. Cano was suspended for testing positive for a diuretic back in 2018. That suspension was only for 80 games but I guess he didn’t learn his lesson. Cano will also be made to forfeit his $24MM salary.
  • Sticking with the Mets, Mets signed RHP Sam McWilliams for a one-year contract for $750k if he plays in the majors. The 6’7 pitcher has been in the minors for the last 6 years with 3 different clubs.
  • Yankees Relief Pitcher Aroldis Chapman’s suspension sentence has been dropped from 3 games to 2 games which he will serve at the beginning of next season. Chapman was suspended after throwing a 101mph fastball by Rays Mike Brosseau. Rays manager was ejected and both benches were given warnings after the incident.

Basketball:

  • NBD 5 NBA players and a couple officials had a private meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican today to discuss their work on social justice issues. Who were those lucky players? Kyle Korver, Sterling Brown, Jonathan Isaac and 2 members of the NBA player’s union.
  • All the deals
    • Dario Saric with stay with the Suns with a 3-year $37MM deal.
    • Jayson Tatum and Celtics signed 5-year extension for up to $195MM, which is the full rookie max. His upside depends on if he makes the 1st, 2nd or 3rd All-NBA team.
    • Aron Baynes and Chris Boucher signed 2-year deals with the Raptors for $14.3MM and $13.5MM, respectively. They also signed DeAndre’ Bembry to a 2-year deal for $4MM.
    • Lakers signed Marc Gasol for a 2-year deal with a veteran min salary of $2.56MM.
    • Rajon Rondo signed a 2-year deal with Hawks for $15MM. The Hawks also offered Bogdan Bogdanovic a 4-year deal for $72MM. Kings have 2 days to respond.
    • Austin Rivers signed a 3-year $10MM deal with the Knicks.
  • Shooting guard Anthony Edwards from Georgia went as the #1 draft pick in the NBA to the Timberwolves! LaMelo Ball went #3 to the Hornets.

Case of the Monday’s:

  • This weeks’ case of the Mondays goes to the TV crew at the USC vs Utah game, where cameras we down for ~5 minutes.

Football – NCAAF:

  • This week saw some great match ups and conference lockups this week with 2 losses in the Top 10. 6 Top 25 games were postponed or canceled.
    • In the Big 10: #9 Indiana put up a good fight against #3 Ohio St, although the Buckeyes were eventually victorious. QB Justin Fields hurt his Heisman chances with 3 interceptions thrown in that game though and some weaknesses in Ohio St’s line was exposed. #19 Northwestern took the lead for the Big 10 West with their win over #10 Wisconsin. 5 turnovers by the Badgers help too.
    • In the Big 12: #18 Oklahoma dominated its Bedlam rival and baby brother #14 Oklahoma St. it was 21-0 in the first quarter and the Sooners never looked back.
    • #7 Cincinnati and #8 BYU remain undefeated and are still knocking on the CFP committee’s door asking to be let in.
    • #21 Liberty’s reign is over with a loss to NC St. They almost had a last minute long FG to win…again. But not to be this time.
    • GameDay is at the Iron Bowl this weekend. Ladies, that means Alabama vs Auburn.
      • #GFHint: it has been called the Iron Bowl since 1964 when Auburn HC Ralph Jordan was expressing his feelings for his team not making a bowl by instead saying they have their own bowl game every year in Alabama. Birmingham is known for its historic role in the steel industry, thus the Iron bowl.
  • CFP rankings come out for the first time on Tuesday 11/24! I will of course update the schedule and rankings when they do. Big questions they will answer: how will they rank an Oregon team who only has 2 games under their belt? Will they put Florida above Texas A&M despite the Aggies win over the Gators? And where do you put BYU and Cincinnati, who are both undefeated but haven’t played anyone impressive on their schedules yet?

Football – NFL:

  • 9 games were decided by a TD or less. The Steelers remain undefeated going to 10-0. The Browns beat the Eagles for the first time since 1994 and without Myles Garrett (out with COVID through next week). The Cowboys got QB Andy Dalton back to win their 3rd The Jets remain winless. In an unlikely twist, the Texans beat the Patriots. Tua was benched for the Dolphins in their loss to the Broncos 20-13. Alex Smith gets his first win after returning from his leg injury. The Saints get a W despite being without Brees. The Packers lost to the Colts in OT.
  • Bengals QB and reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Joe Burrow, went down with a leg injury in the 3Q of their loss against Washington. “See ya next year” was in his tweet. It has been confirmed that it is an ACL and MCL tear. He joins the growing list of 8 players who have suffered ACL tears this season.

  • Update: Drew Brees now has 11 fractured ribs. It was originally thought to be *just* 5 but now after several x-rays is 11: 8 on his left side and 3 on his right. Most were sustained during the Bucs game 2 weeks ago. Brees is expected to miss 3 games. Taysom Hill will be the starter for now.
  • The Broncos are sending their game ball (that they used in their win against the Dolphins) to HoF Floyd Little who is now in hospice care. Little has cancer, announced in May but moved into hospice as of Saturday. This will surely lift his spirits!

Golf:

  • Robert Streb won his 2nd PGA Tour title at the RSM Classic in the 2nd playoff hole against Kevin Kisner. A little déjà vu…He won his other title in a playoff as well back in 2014 at the same tournament which was called the McGladrey Classic at the time. Kevin Kisner has also won at Sea Island in 2015 but this year just short after Streb almost holed out with his pitching wedge on the 2nd playoff hole.

Motorsports:

  • MotoGP had their final race of the 2020 season this Sunday in Portugal and in true hometown favorite fashion, Miguel Oliveira won. Joan Mir already had the championship wrapped up the previous week, which turned out to be huge as he didn’t even finish the race. GBR rider Cal Crutchlow finished 13th in his final race in MotoGP. He is retiring to just become a test rider next year. Also leaving the track for a while is Andrea Dovizioso, who is taking a sabbatical although most speculate he is prob done with the premier class racing. He took 6th in the race. Plenty of changes with many riders changing teams for the next season. See yall back in March!

Olympic Sports:

  • Lolo Jones is back on the Olympic bobsledding team, announced Saturday. She made a 10-person roster for the USA Bobsledding team after 2 days of trials at Mount Van Hoevenberg. Others to make the list: Kaillie Humphries, Lauren Gibbs, Elana Taylor, Nicole Vogt, Sylvia Hoffman, Emily Renna, Lake Kwaza, Colleen Fotsch and Nicole Brungardt.

  • AUT Petra Vlhova took 2 wins in 2 slalom races this weekend. Mikaela Shiffrin took 2nd and 5th after she returned to the World Cup circuit for the first time in 300 days (10 months). Think these 2 ladies dominate the slalom? All 28 World Cup slalom titles since 2017 have been taken by Shiffrin (19 wins) or Vhlova (9 wins and all in 2020).
  • USA TJ Omar Craddock has been suspended for missing 3 doping tests within 12 months. His suspension will not be official until his hearing where timing is TBD at the moment. Christian Coleman, USA favorite in the sprints, has already been suspended for the same problem. Craddock got 4th at the 2015 worlds but won the Pan Am games last year.
