Basketball:

  • Your Christmas wishes are coming true. The NBA will be back on 12/22 with their new season. The 2020/2021 season will be 72 games, will start on 12/22 and will have a break for the Olympics. The 2020 NBA draft will be on 11/18.

Football – NCAAF:

  • #1 Clemson lost their first regular season game since October 2017. Without QB Trevor Lawrence, the Clemson Tigers put up a good fight but ultimately fell to #4 Notre Dame in 2OT. Needless to say there was no social distancing in that celebration. #5 Georgia also lost to SEC East rival #8 Florida 44-28. The Kyles of Florida have that team rolling to potentially face Alabama in the SEC Championship game in December. #13 Indiana handed #23 Michigan their 2nd straight loss and Coach Harbaugh is firmly on the hot seat. #9 BYU put some power in their argument to be included in the CFP by easily winning against #21 Boise St.
    • In other news #10 Wisconsin again has to cancel their game due to COVID concerns. The Badgers have only played their debut game and have now fallen to #14. They were one of the 10 games canceled or postponed this weekend.
    • Alabama has taken over as #1 after Clemson lost. This is their 13th straight year with a #1 ranking.
    • The Pac 12 was back this weekend. #20 USC barely squeaked out a win. And the other ranked Pac 12 team #12 Oregon won against Stanford who to be fair was down their starting QB.
    • Oh the case of the Mondays….

  • This next week GameDay is live from the Masters for the first time! And there are no ranked vs ranked games.

Football – NFL:

  • This week was Battle of the QBs with Drew Brees and the Saints taking on Tom Brady and the Bucs. The Saints got the last laugh as Brees hands Brady what is being considered his worst loss ever 38-3. Last night’s game also led Drew Brees to take the lead in the most TDs ever thrown in NFL history with 564. Brady is in 2nd with 561.
  • 9 games were decided by a TD or less. This included an impressive showing by the severely battered and bruise Cowboys to give the undefeated Steelers a run for their money. Despite losing for most of the game, ultimately Pittsburg remains undefeated. This is the first time in their franchise that they are 8-0. The Panthers had Mahomes and the Chiefs on the ropes until the end of the game but lost 31-33. The Texans won their 2nd game of the season against the Jaguars.
  • With the win this weekend against the Colts, Lamar Jackson has tied Dan Marino for the best start by a QB with a 25-5 record. Dan Marino was the legendary QB for the Dolphins in 1966.
  • Jackson isn’t the only won taking over records, Dalvin Cook, RB for the Vikings, is now the leading rusher in the league after their win over the Lions 34-20. HoFer and former Viking, Adrian Peterson was there to witness Cooks’ new career high of 206 yards with 2 TDs on 22 carries.
  • Washington’s QB Kyle Allen will have surgery on his ankle which was dislocated and had a small fracture during the Giants game this past weekend. Alex Smith, who had a heroic return after a year + of recovery from a leg injury, will start the rest of the reason.
  • Giants DB Logan Ryan had the game clinching interception on Alex Smith to take the W 23-20 and he dedicated it to his wife. Why? His wife had emergency surgery after being diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy. The baby was lost and the couple had been through an extremely emotional week. Glad Ryan could end it on a high note and our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Golf:

  • Carlos Ortiz became the 1st Mexican champion on the PGA Tour in 42 years after winning the Houston Open this weekend. And he did it in style. All he needed was a 2 putt to win but he didn’t need both. He made a 22 foot put for birdie on the final hole. This is Ortiz’s first win on the PGA Tour and he beat big names like Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama who tied for 2nd and Brooks Koepka who got 5th. Better get used to playing with them Carlos, you’re officially on the tour for 3 years!

  • It’s the best week in golf! The Masters will be played this weekend after being postponed due to COVID 19 from its normal April time. This is still technically considered the final 2019/2020 season major championship. No spectators are allowed and all players and caddies will be tested for COVID. For the first time ever, Masters swag is being sold online but you can only purchase it if you purchased a ticket through the club.
    • Who wont be playing? Sergio Garcia announced this morning that he tested positive for COVID 19 so he will be out of the iconic race for the green jacket. He won the Masters in 2017. This is the first major he has missed since 1999. He had the longest record at 84 consecutive majors competed in. Chile’s Joaquin Neimann also tested positive and will not be competing.

Olympic Sports:

  • Tokyo is taking careful steps to show the world that the Olympics can happen 9 months from now. This weekend they held a one-day gymnastics meet with 30 athletes from RUS, CHN, USA and JPN and a several thousand fans in attendance. The athletes not from Japan went into a 14-day quarantine with daily PCR tests. This is the 2nd event the city has thrown. Last week a baseball stadium was filled to capacity. This is good news for Olympic fans.
  • Former 2x Olympic champion in the 1500m Kieren Perkins has been names president of Swimming Australia. He won the gold in both the 1992 and 1996 Olympics but retired from swimming in 2000. Australian swimming is in good, experienced hands.
  • Which it turns out, it might need. Brenton Rickard’s sample from the 2012 London games has tested positive for a masking agent that is a banned substance. If found guilty, 6 swimmers will lose their Bronze medals in the Men’s 4x100m medley relay. AUS has never lost a medal due to a drug case.
  • SLO Primoz Roglic won the Vuelta a España for the 2nd year in a row. He went into the final day of riding ahead by 24 seconds. Although this is some consolation for the Tour de France being stolen in dramatic fashion, Roglic still has his sights set on that yellow jersey. Roglic was a former ski jumper.
  • CHN’s Jin Boyang won the Cup of China figure skating title for his second year in a row. He was in 1st after his short program and landed 2 quads before touching down on his 3rd. But it was enough to take the title over last year’s runner up Yan Han.

Soccer:

  • Alex Morgan is back! She came in as a sub during the 69th minute to make her Tottenham debut after giving birth to her daughter in May. She is on a one-yea loan to the Women’s Super League team from her normal Orlando Pride. Although Tottenham is not doing well after 4 losses including the one Morgan played in, they are thrilled to have her back on the field.
  • LAFC forward Diego Rossi on the MLS Golden Boot and is the youngest player to ever do so. He is only 22 and scored 16 goals this season so far.
