Weekly Update

Baseball-MLB: Round 1 playoff results. Game 5 tonight!

Basketball-NBA: NBA Season begins tomorrow!

Football-NCAAF: Week 7 had undefeated teams falling all over the place. 8 losses in the Top 25. Dieon on 60 Minutes.

Football-NFL: Week 6 had only 6 close games. Eagles remain undefeated. Dak due back for Lions game next week.

Golf: Bradley wins Zozo for first win since 2018. Koepka wins LIV Tour final.

Olympic Sports: Silver medal from 1932 sells for record. Boston to host ISU Figure Skating Worlds 2026.

Soccer: MLS playoffs!

Baseball:

  • Round 1:
    • The playoffs started off with a bang. The Mariners were up 7-5 in the 9th inning on the Astros when Alvarez came up to bat. With his whole family watching, Alvarez smashed a 3-run HR and the walk off win to put the Houston team up 1-0 in the series. The two teams didn’t play again until Thurs, Alvarez HRed again and the Astros take the series lead 2-0. The Mariners had to win on Sat to keep the series alive but in one of the longest playoff games in history, the Astros finally got a run in the 18th Houston sweeps.

    • The Braves and Phillies game was also close but the Phili team edged out the ATL team 7-6. The next day, the Braves didn’t let the Phillies put a run up, evening the series 1-1. Game 3 was also a blow out with the Phillies routing the Braves 9-1. That trend continued on Saturday, the Phillies beat the Braves out of the NLCS game by winning Game 4 8-3.
    • The Guardians have been on a hot streak but the Yankees won Game 1 4-1. Game 2 was postponed due to weather but when they did play the Guardians took the win in the 10th Cleveland also won Game 3 in a close one 6-5. The whole time the series was close so it shouldn’t be surprising that the Yankees won Game 4 to take the series to a winner-take-all Game 5 tonight to decide the final spot in the Championship round.

    • The Dodgers looked like the best team in the league starting fast against the Padres winning Game 1 5-3. The Padres came back fighting in Game 2 though to win with the same score despite having less hits. Padres P Snell lead the Padres to Game 3’s win to lead the series. The Dodgers may have been the favorites to win the World Series when the season started and ended but they were upset by the Padres and are out!

Basketball:

  • NBA is back this week! Season opens with the 76ers at Celtics and then the Lakers at Warriors on TNT.

Football-NCAA:

  • Week 7: 8 losses in the Top 25. There we’re some incredible football games this wknd! There were undefeated match ups in Sec, Big 12 and big 10.

    • The stage was set. The SEC undefeated match up of #3 Alabama who looked vulnerable last week against Texas A&M and Texas earlier in the season and #6 Tennessee who hadn’t beaten Alabama in 15 years (5838 days). Tennessee got off to a fast start. Alabama was down 18 points at one point during the game and had a school record 17 penalties during the game (resulting in 130 yard). And it still came down to the final seconds when Bama missed a FG, but Tennessee didnt miss theirs. Vols win 52-49.
    • Undefeated #7 USC faced #20 Utah. It was a close game with Utah scoring with only 48 seconds left. They had a decision, either kick the PAT and go to OT or go for the two-point conversion and the win. The Utes decided to go for the win with a QB run. It was successful and thus Trojans take their first loss of the season.

    • Also losing was undefeated (and unranked) Coastal Carolina. The last winless team in the FBS got a W and we still have 9 teams that are undefeated.
  • There was a 60 minutes episode on Sunday night with Jacksonville State HC Deion Sanders. I’m not going into the whole 60m of the 60-minute episode but the major takeaway was that he is not interested NFL jobs but he did say he would entertain a Power 5 HC job. The question is which one? Auburn seems to be the school that gets thrown around a lot but they have not fired their coach yet.

Football – NFL:

  • Week 6: 6 games were within a TD this week. The Falcons’ QB Mariota threw 3 TDs in a win 28-14 against the 49ers. QB Zappe and the Patriots got another W this time against the Browns 38-15. The Colts had prolific 2Q and 4Q to take the win over the Jags 34-27. Speaking of those same quarters, neither Vikings or the Dolphins scored in 1Q and 3Q during their close game. MN wins 24-16. The Bengals finally got a break beating the Saints 30-26. Tom Brady and the Bucs had to go for the 2 point conversion to tie the game in its’ final seconds. But the Steelers batted it down to take the W 20-18. The Panthers were leading at half but then they were done scoring and the Rams were not. LA won 24-10. The Bills fumbled on the first drive in a tight game against the Chiefs. And it came down the final minutes. The Bills scored the go-ahead TD with 4:23 left in the game but that left a lot of time for Mahomes to score. However the defense took care of that with an interception to end the game. The last undefeated team faced the Cowboys in SNF. The Eagles scored 20 points in the 2Q alone and that was all that was needed. Well that and the 3 INT. They are now 6-0.
  • Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is planning to come back against the Lions next week after his fractured thumb. The Cowboys haven’t been left in the dumps though as Cooper Rush had won the last 4 games (before facing the Eagles on Sunday).

Golf:

  • The Zozo Championship was played in JPN, thus the time being so off for the USA. And man was it worth the trip for Keegan Bradley. He finished one shot ahead of Rickie Fowler and Andrew Putnam. It got a little dicey after he bogeyed 2 of the final 5 holes but after the birdie on 17, Bradley had a 2-shot lead. Although he won the PGA Championship in 2011, Bradley has only won 5 PGA Tour titles total despite turning pro in 2008. This is Bradley’s first win since 2018 BMW Championship (1498 days).

  • In another teary-eyed win, Brooks Koepka won the final individual event on the inaugural LIV Tour in Jeddah. Koepka has battled injuries since his last win at the WM PHX Open in Feb 2021. He said in his interview afterwards that he didn’t know if his career was done. The 4x major champion earned $4.75MM for this win after his team GC Smash also won. The LIV Golf Series will end later this month with the team finale in Miami with the winner getting $50MM.

Olympic Sports:

  • GER Carl ‘Luz’ Long got 2nd in the Long Jump to Jesse Owens in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. His silver medal sold for $488k making it the most valuable silver medal in GER history. Long was killed in WWII in 1943 while serving in the GER army. Luz Long is known for his friendship with Owens during those games, which was a huge risk during those times. The 1936 Olympics were more Nazi propaganda and yet Long and Owens came out arm-in-arm. The previous record for a silver medal sold was under $100k.
  • Boston was just announced as the host for the 2025 Figure Skating World Championships. This will be the last Worlds before the 2026 Italy Olympics. Boston also hosted the 2016 Worlds.
