Baseball – MLB:

  • Let the offseason begin!
    • Wild Card games are Tues and Wed
    • Then it all begins
      • Who’s in: Astros (as World Series favorites), Rays*, Twins and the A’s* (American). National: Braves, Nationals*, Cardinals, Brewers* at the Dodgers (2nd favorite of betters to win the whole thing)
    • Angels have fired Brad Ausmus after just 1 year as their manager. The Angels had a bad season going 72-90 and losing one of their own in Tyler Skaggs.
    • Cardinals beat writer Derrick Goold saved Mike Flanary’s life (age 64 and videographer) after he collapsed and Goold performed CPR. Goold is a former Eagle Scout and lifeguard. Flanary suffered a heart attack and stroke but is believed to be in stable condition now.

Football – College:

  • The state of California has made it illegal for the NCAA to stop athletes from making money off their own likeness. This new law will go into effect in 2023. With this new law, universities will NOT be paying the athletes but instead will not be allowed to prevent the athletes from making money while in school. They will also be allowed to have agents. More on this to come I am sure.
  • Nebraska hosted Gameday for the first time in 23 years for their game vs Ohio St. For those kids who don’t know, Nebraska and Ohio St are 2 of the longest standing good football teams of all time (Nebraska not so much recently).
  • Speaking of old football powerhouses, SMU is ranked for the 1st time since they received the death penalty in 1987! SMU has only had 1 winning season since the penalty in 1997 when they went 6-5. Right now the Mustangs are 5-0 and ranked #24 in the AP poll this week!
  • Rutgers fired their HC Chris Ash after losing to Michigan 52-0 and only 8 wins over the last 3 seasons. TE coach Nunzio Campanile will serves as interim HC for the time being.
  • Baylor extended their coach’s contract through 2027. Matt Rhule joined Baylor’s staff after the Art Briles resignation in 2016. Baylor is 4-0 after beating the Iowa St Cyclones this weekend.
  • 4 teams lost in the Top 25 this week but only #18 and below. This week has 3 Top 25 match ups including gone inside the Top 10.
    • Gameday is in Gainesville, FL for the #7 Auburn vs #10 Florida game.

Football – NFL:

  • Raiders LB Vontaze Burfict has been suspended for the rest of season after this late helmet hit in the Colts game on Sunday. He was ejected after the hit but the league decided that wasn’t enough punishment as he has had repeat offended using unnecessary roughness. Burfict had 3 illegal hit calls against him in both 2016 and 2017 along with 4 PEDs in 2018.
  • Injury report:
    • Broncos Bradley Chubb tore his ACL and will be out for the season
    • Giants LB Ryan Connelly tore his ACL and will be out for the season as well
    • Bengals AJ Green is not expected to return for the next 2 games after recovering from an ankle surgery in the preseason that is still bothering him.
  • Some rookie QBs to watch for:
    • Daniel Jones playing QB for the Giants
    • Mason Rudolph playing QB for the Steelers
    • Kyler Murry playing QB for the Cardinals
    • Josh Allen playing QB for the Bills
    • Gardner Minshew playing QB for the Jaguars
  • Other news:
    • The Broncos remain win-less losing to the Jaguars
    • The Buccaneers win over the undefeated Rams this past weekend
    • The Browns pulled off a big upset over the Ravens winning 40-25 after an announcer called Browns’ QB Baker Mayfield ‘one dimensional’
    • Chiefs and Patriots are still undefeated both at 4-0

Golf:

  • Cameron Champ won his 2nd PGA title at the Safeway Open this weekend in Napa. Champs’ grandfather who introduced him to the game of golf as a kid is battling stomach cancer nearby in Sacramento, CA. It was an emotional day.

Olympic Sports:

  • The World Championships for Track & Field began in Doha this weekend and its been a good one so far. IAAF worlds runs through 10/6
    • It was a victory for mothers! Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won her 4th 100m title just 2 years after giving birth to her son Zyon. While Allyson Felix earned her 12th gold medal at the World Championships (surpassing Usain Bolt’s record) in the new mixed relay. Felix had her daughter Camryn just 10 months ago. Chinese racewalker Liu Hong won gold after taking off the 2017 and 2018 seasons to have a baby.
    • American Christian Coleman won the 100m but pulled out of the 200m prelims due to soreness. Coleman won the 100m over fellow American Justin Gatlin by .13 seconds which is the biggest margin at Worlds/Olympic competition since 2011.
    • Not a great day of marathon in Doha. 28 women started the race but did not finish and the winner, Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich, ran the slowest time in 35 years with a time of 2:32.43. The race started at 12am and was still 88 degrees at the end of the race.
      • The Bronze medal went to Helalia Johannes from Namibia, the first female to win a medal from that country.
  • In other running news, Kenenisa Bekele won the Berlin marathon (yay) but missed the WR by .02 seconds… ouch. This would have won him 50k euro bonus.
  • The US Olympic HoF finally includes Tommie Smith and John Carlos. Don’t recognize those names? They were the 2 black men who raised their fists on the podium during the medal ceremony in 1968. Their visit to the White House in 2016 was their first official event they took part in since those 1968 Games. Other inductees into the Olympic HoF: Lisa Leslie, Misty May-Treanor, Apolo Ohno, Dara Torres and Nastia Liukin.
  • A runner died while running in the 50km race in Elk City State Park this weekend after being struck by lightning.
