Weekly Update – Week of September 7, 2021

Weekly Update

Baseball: Scherzer 13 KOs. Morton 1 year deal. Oracle Park workers on strike. Red Sox COVID outbreak.

Football-NCAAF: 8 teams in Top 25 lost. ACC struggled. FCS did well. GameDay to Ames this week. UCLA jumps to #14 from unranked.

Football-NFL: Season begins Thursday! Fantasy football drafts must be completed by then.

Golf: Cantaly wins big at Tour Championship and FedEx Cup. Ryder Cup Captains picks tomorrow. EU wins Solheim Cup.

Olympic Sports: Paralympics have closed. Final medal count. NHL players can play in 2022 Beijing Olympics. Last Diamond League meet this week.

Soccer: Ronaldo to ManU debut on Saturday.

Tennis: US Open Quarterfinals set! Djokovic in still.

Baseball-MLB:

  • Dodgers P Max Scherzer struck out 13 players against the Cardinals on Monday. This is his 104th game with double digit strikeouts, the 5th most in MLB history. 6 of those games were against the St. Louis team. Scherzer is now just 6 Kos away from 3,000 strikeouts; he would be the 19th player in league history to hit that threshold.
  • Braves extended P Charlie Morton to a $20MM one-year deal. Morton was with the Rays last season when they reached the World Series. The Braves initially offered him $15MM for one year. Not going anywhere fast.
  • In typical SF fashion, the Oracle Park concession workers have voted (96% of them anyway) to go on strike over COVID concerns. 20 workers have contracted COVID since the stadium reopened. TBD if this will be impactful as the team begins a 6 game road trip and wont play again at home until Sept 13th.
  • Boston Red Sox are having a COVID outbreak, placing 11 players on the COVID list over the last week including Nick Pivetta, who was supposed to start the day he got put on the list.
  • MLB Regular season ends on Oct 3 so I will now include the standings on the weekly basis.
    • American League: Rays, Astros & White Sox
    • National League: Giants, Dodgers & Brewers

Football-NCAAF:

  • Week 1 was no disappointment. We saw 8 teams in the Top 25 lose including #3 Clemson, #10 UNC in the top 10 and #20 Washington lost to a FCS team. UCLA looks like they will make a case for a Top 25 spot. The ACC struggled with all 3 of its top teams losing: Clemson, NC, Miami.
    • Upset watch:
  • GameDay is heading to Ames, IA for that state’s showdown between Iowa and Iowa St. Iowa made a powerful statement against Indiana this weekend while Iowa St struggled against Northern Iowa.

Football-NFL:

  • NFL season starts Thursday with the Cowboys vs Bucs! Football will be in full swing!
    • Texans have named their starting QB as Tyrod Taylor after DeShaun Watson currently has 22 civil lawsuits and is requesting a trade. He is still n the roster.
    • The Ravens extend their deal with TE Mark Andrews for 4 years for $56MM. This puts Andrews only behind Travis Kelce and George Kittle in amounts paid to a TE.
  • Fantasy football drafts must happen before Thursday!

Golf:

  • Cantlay wins FedEx Cup! Cant say we’re too surprised here with the way he was putting and playing but that’s a huge $15MM payday. He came into the FedEx Cup with less than $15MM in lifetime earnings. He beat Jon Rahm by 1 stroke.
  • The 2021/2022 season begins next week in Napa at the Fortinet Championship and the Ryder Cup will be played the week following. Captains’ picks for the Ryder Cup will be announced tomorrow!

  • Speaking of the Ryder Cup, the women’s version was contested this weekend. And Europe will get to keep the Solheim Cup beating the USA.

Olympic Sports:

  • The Paralympics have come to a close and that concludes Tokyo’s hosting duties. The final medal count: CHN 207, GBR 124, RPC 118 & USA 104. Golds: CHN 96, GBR 41 & USA 37.
    • Jessica Long earned her 29th paralympic medal.
  • SLO Primoz Roglic won his 3rd straight Spanish Vuelta by 4 min and 42 seconds, that’s the largest gap in this race since 1997. He won 4 stages. He was pleased with his bounce back since he WD in from the Tour de France (due to 2 crashes early) and since his Olympic gold in the time trial.
  • NHL players will be allowed to compete in the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games. The NHL, NHLPA and IOC all came to an agreement that was fitting for all sides. This is a W as NHL players have been fighting to return to the games. The league will take a break for the games from 2/3 – 2-22.
  • The Diamond League has its final meet this week in Zurich. But last week’s meet saw some attempts at records. NED Sifan Hassan run the 5th fastest mile time in history (this makes her 3 of the top 5 times ever) with 4:17.74. she holds the WR of 4:12.33 that she set 2 years ago. SWE Armand Duplantis competed a whole 30 minutes after the rest of the meet was over to attempt his 6.19m PV. He missed all 3 attempts. USA swept the medals in the M 100m.

Soccer:

  • Ronaldo scored his 110th and 111th goals internationally during Portugal’s win over Ireland on Wednesday. He is now the record holder of the most goals scored ever. He was then released by the team to go back to ManU for his debut on 9/11 against Newcastle. This was only 6 days earlier than he was originally going to be released and the POR coach wanted him to have more time to prepare rather than playing in the international friendly match against QAT. POR clearly doesn’t need Ronaldo’s help as they lead ARG 2-0 at half.

Tennis:

  • US Open is in the quarterfinal stage!
    • American Shelby Rogers pulled off an incredible upset, beating Ashleigh Barty, world #1, in the 3rd However after her lose to GBR’s Emma Raducanu in straight sets, Rogers has said she is expecting death threats and wished social media didn’t exist. Fellow American Sloane Stephens backed up Rogers saying she also received abusive and harassing messages on Instagram after her loss to Angelique Kerber. Osaka also lost in that same round.
    • Djokovic, despite going down a set 1-6 to #99 Jenson Brooksby, is now only 3 wins away from the first calendar slam in 52 years.
    • Men’s bracket
      • Djokovic vs Berrettini
      • Zverev vs Harris
      • Auger-Aliassime vs Alcaraz
      • Van de Zandschlup vs Medvedev
