Weekly Updates – Week of November 19, 2018

Basketball – College: 11. Michigan vs 17. UCLA game on Thanksgiving

Basketball – NBA: Warriors are strugglin’. LeBron scores 50+ points.

Football – College: #9 looses. Conference Championship games some are set and some are very up in the air.

Football – NFL: Condi squashes coach rumors. Alex Smith injury.

Golf: Tiger Woods vs Phil Mickelson PPV match on Friday. Howell III wins for the first time in 11 years. Jutanugarn wins CME title. Molinari wins Race to Dubai. 

Olympic Sports: Calgary drops 2026 Olympic bid. Hirsher wins again.

Basketball – College:

  • Brian Bowen II filed a lawsuit against Adidas for racketeering, claiming the company was into money laundering, fraud and bribery. Bowen II was not allowed to play while at Louisville and signed a contract in Aug to play professionally in Australia.
  • Villanova, defending national champions, lost back to back games for the first time since the 2013 season. They first lost big time to #18 Michigan 73-46 and then again to Furman in OT on Saturday (score: 76-68) at home! This knocked Villanova out of the top 25 rankings.

  • UConn men’s basketball coach Hurley got ejected from their game against Iowa in the final 1 min 44 seconds.
  • Memphis forward Azab died of leukemia on Thursday. He discovered he had leukemia last year during the season and lost his battle this past week.

Basketball – NBA:

  • The Warriors had some bad luck all across the lone star state losing to the Rockets, then the Mavs and the Spurs. After an electric 11-2 start, it seems the Warriors have found some growing pains, exacerbated by the injury to Curry.
  • LeBron scored 51 points against his old team, the Heat, on Sunday helping the Lakers win 113-97. This was also his first win in Miami since leaving in 2014.

Football – College:

  • 5 teams went down in the Top 25 including #9 West Virginia.
  • GameDay will be live from Columbus for the Ohio St vs Michigan game. The winner will take on Northwestern in the Big 10 title game next week.
  • Rumors are swirling, and for once are true, Kansas has signed a deal with Les Miles to become their new head coach. Kansas football has 3 wins this season (equal to the last 3 seasons combined) but put up 40 points against #6 Oklahoma on Saturday.
  • Championship Games: some are set and some depend on this weekend. All we do know for sure is its going to be some great football!
    • The SEC game is set: Alabama vs Georgia.
    • The ACC game is set: Clemson vs Pitt.
    • The winner of Ohio St/Michigan will play Northwestern for the Big 10 title.
    • The winner of the Houston/Memphis game will play UCF for the American Championship title
    • The winner of the East will play N. Illinois for the MAC title
    • The winner of the East will play UAB for the Conference USA title.
    • Pac 12 Championship is yet to be decided
    • Big 12 Championship is yet to be decided
      • If Oklahoma beats WV, Oklahoma will play WV in the championship game
      • If WV beats Oklahoma, WV will play Texas in the championship game

Football – NFL:

  • Condi would like to put a stop to all the rumors, she is not going to coach the Browns… at least not yet anyway! No woman has ever been the head coach of a NFL team to date.  
  • Alex Smith, Redskins QB, broke his right leg in 2 places on Sunday during the game against the Texans. Former UT QB, Colt McCoy has been named the starter for now. The redskins also signed Mark Sanchez as backup.
  • Cowboys WR Michael Gallup’s brother killed himself on Sunday. Gallup could be seen getting consoled after the game against the Falcons. Gallup was 1 of 8 kids (6 of whom were adopted). Our prayers are with his family.

Golf:

  • Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson play their big PPV winner take all $9MM match on Friday in Las Vegas. Its only $20 to watch at 2pm.
  • Charles Howell III won the RSM Classic on Sunday in a playoff against Patrick Rodgers. This is his first victory in 11 years. This win also earns him a spot in the Masters, for the first time since 2012.
  • Francesco Molinari won the Race to Dubai title after Fleetwood fell 4 shots shy of winning the final tournament of the year.  
  • Lexi Thompson won the final event of the LPGA season leaving the $1MM prize and the CME title to Ariya Jutanugarn.

Olympic Sports:

  • Calgary withdrew its bid for the 2026 Olympics
    • Stockholm and joint Italian bid (Milan and Cortina d’Amprezzo) are still in the running
  • Even after getting married and becoming a father, Marcel Hirsher is unbeatable on the slopes. The Austrian won the World Cup slalom on Sunday with the fastest time in both runs.
