Weekly Updates – Week of October 8, 2018

College Football: Wins and Loses

NFL: The good and bad days of kickers and close games!

MLB: Post Season is now in session!

Golf: South Korea wins the International Crown

Olympic Sports: Surfing reimagined. Mo Farah wins in Chicago.

College Football:

  • 8 teams in the Top 25 lost this weekend with 3 losses in the Top 10.
  • College GameDay is in Ann Arbor, MI for Wisconsin vs Michigan game.
    • #GFHint: Did you know that College GameDay tried not to go to the same campus more than 1x per year. There are too many schools and usually too many good games to justify it.
  • The OU/TX game did not disappoint! With a nail biter in the fourth quarter, Texas squeaked out the win with a score of 48-45. As a result, Oklahoma parted ways with their Defensive Coordinator, Mike Stoops. This game had >1,000 yrds of offense.
    • If both teams win out, we could see them in the Big 12 Championship game for a rematch in Dallas in December.
    • #GFHint: Each team and their fans put their name first on the Red River Rivalry so you will hear it called both ways, but since I am a Sooner, on this website it will be called the OU/TX game
  • Notre Dame is now ranked #5 and has the easiest schedule of the top 10 remaining. They might make a push for the CFP, kicking out a Power 5 conference.
    • #GFHint: Notre Dame football does not technically belong to any conference. The rest of the school’s sports play in the ACC.
  • Miami WR Richards suffered a neck injury making it too risky to play football. His career is now over.
  • Other losses in the top 25:

NFL:

  • Having a bad day? Its probably not as bad as Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby who missed 13 points worth of kicks (4 FGs and an extra point) in the Packers’ loss to the Loins on Sunday. For someone who usually makes 85% of his kicks, this was an abnormally bad day.
  • Was it a bad day for kickers? Not all of them! Panther’s kicker Graham Gano tied the NFL record for longest game winning FG with a 63 yr kick to win the game against in the last second vs Giants 33-31. The record for longest FG ever is 64 yrs set in 2013.
  • The Texas teams had their rivalry game on Sunday and the Houston Texans came out on top, winning in OT vs the Cowboys 19-16
  • The Browns also tacked up another W with a 12-9 win in OT over the Ravens. This is the Brown’s first AFC North win since 2015.

MLB Postseason

MLB:

  • So many games to watch, so little time. The Brewers have already punched their ticket and the Astros have done the same. Upcoming games are below!
  • The World Series begins 10/23 – 10/31 (if needed)
    • Reigning champions: Houston Astros

Golf:

  • South Korea won the UL International Crown for the first time, holding off the US and England.  Think of this as the World Cup for women’s golf with the best 8 teams competing.
  • Kevin Tway wins the Safeway Open in a playoff
    • Kevin is the son of Bob Tway, 8x PGA Tour winner

man made wave

Olympic Sports

  • World Surf League announced that it will have equal prize money for men and women starting in 2019. This press conference was hosted before the first Champions Tour event that will be competed in a manmade wave
    • The new man-made wave concept was implemented thanks to Kelly Slater Wave Company after 10 years of development and research. The wave reaches 8 ft and 20 mph
    • This new method is expected to be used more and more going forward, especially as the sport makes its Olympic debut in 2020
  • Mo Farah wins the Chicago marathon in 2 hours 5 min and 11 seconds, the fastest time recorded by a European. This was Mo Farah’s 3rd marathon ever.
